Take two Spanish dances and one noted composer and what do you have? "Sketches of Spain" from the pen of Dave Black! This original work captures the essence of old Spain in two movements inspired by well-known Spanish dances, (the tango and paso doble) that show off the talents of your band. This barn-burner is a great way to end your concert with a musical "ole!" This product has a difficulty rating of 3 on a scale of 1 to 6 with 6 being the hardest.
Technical Notes: The percussion 1 part is for claves, shaker or maracas, and castanets. The percussion 2 part is for snare drum, crash cymbals, and claves.
"Sketches of Spain" was commissioned by the Foothills Music Club, for the students of Conert Band 3 at Foothills Middle School in Arcadia, California, directed by Sandra Ragusa.
Motivated by the composer's interest and travels in Latin America, this original work captures the essence of old Spain in two movements inspired by well-known Spanish dances, the tango and the paso doble. The piece is rhythm-driven, evoking beautiful images of these traditional dances with their brightly colored costumes and captivating movements.
Accents and phrasing are extremely important to the success of the performance and should be carefully observed. Fun, syncopated bass lines and the use of Latin-American percussion instruments carry the excitement of the pieces right up to the end, where the audience can envision the dancers coming to their final, rousing "ole!"
